At Edmonton Public Schools, we believe that healthy bodies fuel bright minds. When our students are well-nourished, they don’t just attend class - they thrive, creating a foundation for lifelong success. This March, as we celebrate National Nutrition Month, we embrace the theme ’Nourish to Flourish.’ It’s a call to look beyond the plate and recognize the vital systems and informed choices that empower every student to grow, learn and reach their full potential.

Schools play an essential role in providing access to nutritious food every day for many children and youth. For families across our city, rising food costs and changing circumstances can make consistent access to healthy meals a challenge. That is where Top-ups for Tummies makes a meaningful difference.

How Top-ups for Tummies Works
We’re grateful to see an increasing awareness in the community of the growing need for school nutrition funding. At the same time, gaps still exist between the resources available and the need for daily nutrition support. The Edmonton Public Schools Foundation is proud to support the Division through Top-ups for Tummies, a program designed to help bridge the funding gaps, strengthening school nutrition strategies and ensuring more equitable access to wholesome food at school.

The program allows schools to apply for funding to fill gaps in existing nutrition programs or to address emerging needs. Whether it’s providing a hard-boiled egg and a piece of fruit to a student without breakfast or ensuring a cafeteria gift card is discreetly available for a teenager in need of a nutritious lunch, this funding is used exclusively to enhance or supplement current efforts. This flexible approach ensures that support is responsive, dignified and grounded in local realities.

What the Funding Supports

In alignment with National Nutrition Month, our schools are looking at nutrition holistically. Top-ups for Tummies allows schools to respond in ways that are practical, inclusive and respectful. This year, funding supports:

 - Fresh Access: Fruit bowls in common areas for easy student access throughout the day.
 - Wholesome Snacks: Protein-rich options like hard-boiled eggs, trail mix and yogurt.
 - Inclusive Lunches: Programs that allow students to discreetly access meals alongside their peers.
 - Cultural Connection: Soup and bannock programs and other culturally responsive food supports.
