Sandra Woitas
Honored as one of the 100 most influential Edmontonians of the century, Sandra has been a longtime educator (30+ years) and advocate for Edmonton’s most disadvantaged children and families. “I believe we can no longer make excuses for not meeting the needs of our marginalized children and youth and can only be part of the solution.” During her career, Sandra adopted several roles, all aimed towards helping students realize their full potential. She has been a special education teacher, school counselor, consultant and principal. As a Professor at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Education, a former Director of the City Centre Education Project with Edmonton Public Schools and formally on secondment with Alberta Education/Alberta Mental Heath Board, Sandra brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion to the Foundation. Along with her professional experience, Sandra also volunteers with several organizations, including as a member of the University of Alberta Senate, a board member with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, an in-school mentor and a member of the Alberta Health Services Capital Region Health Advisory Counsel.
Alva Shewchuk
With more than 20 years of experience in communications and community relations, Alva has worked at Alberta Education and Edmonton Public Schools to help students succeed. “Being part of something that positively impacts the lives of children and youth is near and dear to my heart.” Along with being actively involved in the Association of Fund Raising Professionals and the Alberta Association of Fund Raising Executives, Alva is also a serial volunteer.
